Marshall Davey’s paper, Patient-Specific Analysis of Ventricular Vortex Formation and Flow Energetics in Rheumatic and Calcific Mitral Stenosis, has been accepted for publication in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. This study was done in collaboration with Arash Kheradvar at UC Irvine, Gregg Pressman at Jefferson Einstein Medical Center, and Mohammad Saber Hashemi at Kansas State University.
This study uses fluid-structure interaction simulations based on patient-specific, echocardiography-derived valve geometries to compare ventricular vortex formation and energetics in mitral stenosis caused by either rheumatic disease or mitral annular calcification (MAC). Both diseased valves disrupted normal vortex formation, and the results suggest that MAC-associated stenosis may impose a greater energetic burden on ventricular flow than rheumatic stenosis.
Congratulations, Marshall!
